Detroit Lions should make the safer trade for Trent Williams

Some players in the NFL are not shy about speaking their mind. Jalen Ramsey is a player that does a lot of talking but for the most part, backs it up on the football field.  He’s recently expressed his desire to be traded from the Jacksonville Jaguars after their loss Sunday to the Houston Texans.  Should the Detroit Lions make a pitch for the star cornerback?

The Detroit Lions have put a lot of time and money into their defense since Matt Patricia has seized the head coaching role. It makes plenty of sense, Patricia is a defensive-minded head coach. He’s brought in players that fit his scheme, yes, the same system the New England Patriots run.

After snatching Damon Harrison from the New York Giants in exchange for a cup of coffee and whatever spare change found in the seat cushions of the coach bus. The Detroit Lions have also added Trey Flowers who, of course, is very familiar with Patricia from their days together in New England.  The Lions also bolstered the secondary by adding Justin Coleman who was widely considered as the top Nickelback (slot) corner available.  Just when you thought the defense was set the team also signed pro bowl defensive tackle Mike Daniels after the Green Bay Packers released him.

A common theme throughout the NFL is players continuing to speak their mind.  Per Adam Schefter, Jalen Ramsey recently asked to be traded from the Jags.  It’s only a week after nearly all the Miami Dolphins asked to be moved from that dumpster fire in South Beach.

Should the Detroit Lions pursue Jalen Ramsey?  The idea of adding one of the best corners in football to go along with another one of the best corners in Darius Slay is very tempting.  With the spread, high powered offenses throughout the league it would be nice to have that stellar DL complimented with two corners that play outside who could completely take away the pass.

More from Detroit Jock City

It would be reminiscent of the Denver Broncos a few years ago when Aqib Talib and Chris Harris played behind Vonn Miller, causing left tackles, quarterbacks and receivers to lose some sleep on the Saturday night before the game.

I recently wrote about the Detroit Lions could have been looking to add Minkah Fitzpatrick who inevitably was dealt to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The other player mentioned, who I felt would fit the Lions better is Xavien Howard.  He could still be a possibility if the Dolphins decide to empty the entire cupboard.

As much as I’d like both of those players, Ramsey’s rookie deal is set to expire at the end of the 2020 season.  He’s due for a massive contract, something the Detroit Lions won’t likely be able to afford.  If the Lions were a player away, I’d be all for moving the first-round pick for his services, I feel the team would not draft a player of this talent with the pick they’d move–he’s that good. The problem is, the Lions aren’t just a player away from the Super Bowl & he’s already mentioned publically he will test the open market explicitly looking into the States that have the lowest income tax required to pay.

I still stand by my initial opinion.  I feel it’s once again time to solidify the offensive line.  I understand Trent Williams (31) is on the back nine of his career, but he’s still a beast.  He’s one of the better LT’s in the league.  He’s currently holding out, hoping to strike a new deal with Washington or be moved elsewhere.

Williams has two years remaining on his five-year, $68 million dollar contract. He’s a player I’d love to see in Detroit if they could tinker the guaranteed money and maybe add a year to the deal.  That would leave the Lions with options.  Either move Taylor Decker to Washington or maybe to RT if he’s deemed better than Rick Wagner.  Trent Williams is undoubtedly better than both.

One final thought on the outspoken stars of today; superstar players like Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham are regularly in the headlines.  It’s become a soap-opera.  Brown currently has some serious allegations against him, Beckham wore a watch on his wrist for some reason in week one.  Monday night he also had to remove a tinted visor in favor of a clear one during the game. It seems once you are out of the headlines for a hot minute they do their best to get back in.

Next. Making the Case for One Significant Trade. dark

The New York Jets hard-hitting, standout safety Jamal Adams was benched Monday night after back to back penalties.  He’s since unfollowed the Jets on twitter and removed them from his bio.  Is he the next to ask for a trade?
