The 2019/20 NHL regular season is swiftly approaching.  It seems like a perfect time to talk about some of the Detroit Red Wings top prospects.

It’s been a summer of excitement surrounding the Detroit Red Wings organization who decided to finally part ways with their long-time general manager Ken Holland.  Things appeared to become quite stale with Holland at the helm.

That being said, most of these prospects that we site in the top-twenty are draft picks of Holland.  Although he appeared to be loyal to a fault, something we the fans grew tired of, many NHL players admire the loyalty.

I felt like Ken Holland finished his tenor as GM with one of the better drafts of his Detroit Red Wings career. It was a draft that landed the Wings with a much-needed group of difference makers. In ’18 Holland landed Filip Zadina, who is expected to grow into a premier scorer.

The same draft landed the Wings Joe Veleno, Jared McIsaac, Alec Regula, Jonatan Berggren amongst others.  Hint: All these guys are likely to resurface in this article.

Part of the reason why the Detroit Red Wings were quick to move on from Holland this spring was that the organization saw an opportunity to bring their adopted son in Steve Yzerman home.  Steve Yzerman brings a new sense of hope to the city.

He has a beautiful track record with the Tampa Bay Lightning although the franchise was unable to win a championship during his time there.  Yzerman also has enjoyed plenty of success in the past as the face of Hockey Canada.

In Steve Yzerman’s first draft as the boss of the Detroit Red Wings, he opened some eyes by drafting Mo Seider with the sixth overall pick.  He followed it up by drafting two more defenders out of the teams next three picks.  It was apparent Yzerman was trying to retool a defense core that has been lacking any type of top prospects for quite some time. Many of Yzerman’s picks from 2019 will also be found in this article.
