Filip Larsson, University of Denver, 13-6-3 in 2018-19

Filip Larsson is the Detroit Red Wings top goaltending prospect.  He enjoyed an incredible season last year with the University of Denver.  Larsson posted a staggering 1.95 GAA, .932% save percentage to go along with his stellar 13-6-3record.

Larsson is shaping up to be a bargain for the Detroit Red Wings. A fantastic find by Ken Holland and his staff.  Larsson was drafted with the 167th pick in the 6th round of the 2016 NHL Entry Level Draft.

He looks like a tremendous find for the organization.  He will have an opportunity to develop into the next franchise goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings if everything continues to progress as positive as it did in college for the netminder.

Calvin Pickard was signed this summer by the Detroit Red Wings over the summer, and I didn’t understand the move.  At first, the organization said he’d compete with Jonathan Bernier to be Jimmy Howard‘s primary backup.

Now it appears Pickard is there solely to mentor Larsson who will be entering his first year of professional hockey with the Grand Rapids Griffins. It could be a move that pays off considerably as the season wears on because inevitably the kid will face a couple of roadblocks and rather than having another rookie netminder with him he will have an experienced goaltender to lean on for advice.

Early Expectation: At this point, there is no reason not to think that Filip Larsson progresses in Grand Rapids all season long eventually becoming the teams’ backup goaltender at the NHL level in a year or two.  If everything goes to play Filip Larsson could be the Detroit Red Wings franchise goaltender in three years from now.
