Detroit Red Wings: Time For The Youth Movement To Take Over
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Red Wings have officially entered into a new era, the youth movement is taking over, and it’s time to see these draft picks and prospects shine.
Recently, Detroit Jock City site expert Bob Heyrman wrote about the retirement of Niklas Kronwall and how it is signaling a youth movement amongst the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings roster is filled with youngsters as well as some veterans who fans should be advocating their departures.
New Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman selected defenseman Moritz Seider with the sixth overall draft pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The pool of young players who are waiting for their chance while playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins is plentiful.
With the demotion of Evgeni Svechnikov and Filip Zadina, it sure seems like someone like Justin Abdelkader is hogging minutes from these guys who could be up and earning their chance with the NHL roster.

The youth movement has started with the number of youngsters currently on the roster like Taro Hirose, Michael Rasmussen, and the young defense core. The more recent core of forwards has moved on, and the veterans fit well with the young core that this team is embodying as they look to make a push from the bottom of the standings.
The catch with the defenseman is the veterans that are keeping players like Oliwer Kaski in Grand Rapids with the Griffins. With Trevor Daley and Jonathan Ericsson taking up minutes even if they do not dress every game, it keeps the young players out of the lineup.
Filip Hronek looks to separate himself to stand alone as the top pairing defenseman for the long haul this year as a younger player. The era of Nicklas Lidstrom and Niklas Kronwall manning the blue lines have passed, and the new crowd looks to fill these roles and take the Red Wings back to competition.
Detroit Red Wings GM Yzerman is an “architect” as contributor Dale Rosenberger expanded on, but the youth movement is finally in motion, and it should produce some great things. Seeing the youngsters get their chance to crack the NHL roster and start their NHL careers.
If the youth movement can take off, there is a plentiful amount of other players who can fill roles and keep this team in a spot where they can hopefully become a contender. For now, the fate of 2019 rests in the balance of Steve Yzerman, Jeff Blashill, and the players who suit up in Red and White on the nightly basis trying to grind out wins.
Fans should hope to see a younger generation of players consistently, hoping the signs of good talent for the future and growth amongst the youngsters as they forge their paths in the NHL.
