Detroit Lions: Five Things to Know About the Green Bay Packers
By Bob Heyrman
Who on the Packers has impressed you the most so far this season?
Paul: I’ve been most impressed by Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith. These were two free-agent signings that I was very excited about, but their production over the first five weeks has exceeded my expectations. The duo has combined for 10 sacks and 54 total pressures.
For a little context, Nick Perry and Clay Matthews combined for 43 total pressures the entire 2018 season. To put it simply, they’ve been game-changers. Whether it’s a crucial sack or putting pressure on the quarterback which leads to a turnover, they have been instrumental in the Packers’ early success this season.
Bob’s Response: Under the new leadership, the Green Bay Packers have finally been trying to bolster their defense understanding that Aaron Rodgers can make the players around him better on offense. While Clay Matthews became a fan favorite, his best days are in the rearview mirror. Sometimes teams’ refuse to move on from those types of players, so kudos to the Packers.
Similar to the Detroit Lions, the Packers brought in a couple of linebackers who can wreck a game. The Detroit Lions will have to make a conscious effort to use a tight end and running back to chip the Smiths’ tonight, making sure they slow their pass-rush. Matthew Stafford will need to use a three-step drop more than usual to slow the pressure.
