So, the Detroit Lions have decided to trade their starting safety, captain, team leader, locker room glue guy, Quandre Diggs to the Seattle Seahawks.

This is a move by general manager Bob Quinn that makes absolutely no sense what so ever.  Why on earth are you trading the team leader in the secondary?  The Detroit Lions are currently in the bottom of the NFC North; perhaps the move is to set up another trade for a running back after the news broke that Kerryon Johnson was being placed on Injury Reserve earlier today.

If that’s the case, it makes this deal even worse.  Let me explain.  As I just mentioned, the Lions currently sit last in the North, with loses to Minnesota and Green Bay.  Kerryon Johnson has struggled to find any consistency this season in the run game.

His recent knee injury is concerning, but why mortgage your future for another back?  If Detroit happened to be in first place, threatening to win the division, I’d be all for it.  Go get Melvin Gordon or Kenyan Drake.

I believe Melvin Gordon is a top-ten back in football, but that is something we should start to question.  Since returning to the Chargers after his hold out, Austin Ekeler has remained the better option.  How much tread is left on Melvin Gordon’s tires?

The Chargers had the money to extend him yet chose not too, why?  Something to think about.  Drake could likely be had for a fourth or fifth-round pick.  So if he becomes the target, why not keep Diggs and make the move?  Perhaps the Lions are just sellers?  It just doesn’t make sense.  With Jay Ajayi and Spencer Ware sitting out there for the taking as free agents, why not grab one of them to pair with Ty Johnson for the remainder of the season?

Further making this Diggs move rediculous.  I just don’t understand the logic behind the move.  But here it is…

The Detroit Lions traded Diggs along with a seventh-round pick to Seattle for a fifth-round pick.  That’s it? Apparently…  I don’t get it at all.  Bob Quinn is essentially gifting Diggs to Seattle.  At that price, I’m shocked he and Patricia didn’t do their old friend Bill a solid in New England.

The Lions recently re-signed Diggs to a long term deal worth an average of $7 million per season until the conclusion of the 2021 season.  Diggs has recorded 20 tackles on the season.  He’s defended 3 passes and has only allowed 3 catches on the season for 61 yards.  While the Lions are very deep at the safety position Diggs is only 26-years old and valuable to the other young safeties like second-year pro, Tracy Walker and rookie Will Harris.

The move hasn’t been a popular move throughout the Lions locker room.  Check out this tweet sequence from Detroit’s All-Pro corner Darius Slay after seeing Tom Pelissero break the unfortunate news;

The Detroit Lions defensive tackle Damon Harrison also reacted on social media.

The move won’t go over well in the locker room.  It signals Detroit is content being sellers as they’ve struggled to close football games out.  Also, I’m sure the trade leaves many other veteran players a little unsettled, wondering if they could be next.

Next. Lions need to utilize rookie Ty Johnson. dark

It’s a move that won’t be very popular with other veteran players throughout the league.  It could prevent future free agents from wanting to sign in Detroit while Bob Quinn and company remain in charge.
