The Detroit Lions absolutely have no sense of direction
By Bob Heyrman
The trade deadline has come and gone yet the Detroit Lions stood pat with the unit they’ve got. The problem is not making a move yesterday signals the franchise has no idea which direction to go.
I feel like the Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn didn’t feel comfortable selling but was also reluctant to buy. Yesterday Quinn was the guy in the grocery store blocking an isle while sifting through all the different brands of apples looking for the perfect kind. Just pick a bag and go, for the love of…
As we all continue to react to the Detroit Lions not making any additional roster moves yesterday don’t forget they did trade away Quandre Diggs about a week ago. Whether you agree with the move or not they did something. While I don’t quite agree with the move, I feel like I understand why they made the move.
Diggs wasn’t playing at the same level he once did, plus he was due to make $6.2 million on average for two more years after the conclusion of this season. The Lions also recently invested in both Tracy Walker and Will Harris through the NFL draft. They currently have veterans Tavon Wilson and Miles Killebrew rostered. Oh, and don’t forget about C.J Moore who was able to show flashes during the preseason. Even without Diggs, it’s a deep position for the Lions who can now spend that freed up money next offseason elsewhere.

So, yes the Detroit Lions did make a deal. Was it the deal you were looking for? Probably not. Besides Aquib Talib being shipped to Miami, it was a very boring day. There were plenty of rumors floating around including star safety Jamal Adams being linked to both Dallas and Detroit. The New York Jets were hoping to move on from Le’Veon Bell just a half of a season into his new deal. Melvin Gordon was available at the right price.
The Detroit Lions apparently kicked the tires on Chris Harris Jr from the Denver Broncos but didn’t make a serious enough offer. It appears Detroit may have been interested in adding Harris and potentially flipping Darius Slay for a couple of draft picks. The plan never transpired.
I wasn’t to keen on the idea of trading Darius Slay. I mean did you guys see the play of the Detroit corners last week against the Giants? A player named Darius Slayton took Rashaan Melvin to school not once but twice. The Lions clearly missed their all-pro corner last week.
The Lions currently rank 32nd in the league allowing on average 290 passing yards per game. I couldn’t imagine how bad they’d be without Slay. They also rank second-last in total yards yielding 420 yards per week.
Detroit ranks 26th allowing 131 rushing yards per game. This defense isn’t nearly as good as they were last season, and I have no idea why. Have players like Damion Harrison, Trey Flowers, and Darius Slay all regressed? I understand Flowers wasn’t here last season, but he’s an all-pro caliber defensive end. Adding Flowers alone should have made this defense better, plus they’ve added Justin Coleman.
The Lions have struggled to run the football, a bold move would have been trading for left-tackle Trent Williams who’s been a pro bowler seven times out of the last nine seasons. They’d be able to slide Taylor Decker over to right tackle serving as an upgrade to Rick Wagner. Although that would be a move that would have cost the Lions a first-round pick, it would be a bold move. Something the franchise is reluctant to produce.
Perhaps the Lions should have added Le’Veon Bell? The Jets apparently were willing to part ways with the star running back for as little as a 4th round pick. It’s his $13.5 million average annual salary that hampers things. Plus, he’s a 28-year old running back. That’s old in running back years. Melvin Gordon would have been a nice cheaper rental piece but to be honest I don’t think the running game improves much without upgrading the offensive line.
After realizing the Arizona Cardinals added Kenyan Drake from the Miami Dolphins for a conditional 6th round pick, I started to realize the Detroit Lions wouldn’t be too busy yesterday. Drake fills an immediate need, fits the offensive scheme and at that price what do you have to lose? He’s nearly a carbon copy of Kerryon Johnson and would be an upgrade to the backs currently rostered for the remainder of the season. A big swing and miss for Bob Quinn and company.
It appears the Detroit Lions continue to sit in the middle of an intersection not knowing which way to turn. It’s a little bit unsettling if you are a fan.
