Lions: A look at former Lions currently excelling elsewhere in the NFL
By Bob Heyrman
Kyle Van Noy
The Detroit Lions selected Kyle Van Noy in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the 40th pick overall. As a youngster in Detroit, he struggled to find his way. Once he landed in New England, he started to excel.

He’s slated to become an unrestricted free agent as seasons’ end, but he’s been so good this season in particular for the New England Patriots I don’t see them allowing him to explore his options. Don’t be surprised if Van Noy is locked up as soon as New England’s season concludes.
Kyle does struggle with tackling at times, but overall, he’s an above-average pass rusher from his outside linebacker position. He’s quietly improved in coverage. This season he’s only allowed 5 catches against totaling just 73 yards, a vast improvement from years past.
I bring up Van Noy because I feel this is the greatest weakness on the current Detroit Lions defense. Their group of linebackers needs improvement. Luke Kennard is having himself an outstanding season.
I don’t have much confidence in Jarrad Davis, although he seemed to be finally improving before being injured on Sunday. Rookie Jahlani Tavai is improving each week and will definitely be a starting moving forward in this league. It’s Christian Jones who somehow earned himself a contract extension that could be replaced by Van Noy.
I expect Kyle to be a target of the Detroit Lions if the Patriots decide not to retain his services this offseason.
Van Noy has 45 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 6.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and 1 touchdown this season with New England. Plus he’s won two Super Bowls with the Patriots.
