The Detroit Red Wings have given away Vili Saarijärvi by way of trade and then gave away Eric Comrie by way of waivers. The Winnipeg Jets completed this slew of unfortunate events after they claimed Eric Comrie off waivers while he was placed on waivers by the Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings fanbase is bought into the Yzer-plan and is going to give Steve Yzerman and his front office regime at least some time to right the ship and turn it around. But the simple fact is, the Red Wings are dead last in the standings, carrying the worst goal differential and cannot string together a week where they add two points to the season total. The way it stands, there’s a chance the Red Wings crawl across the finish line with forty points on the line.

Fans know that the Red Wings’ current goaltending situation is atrocious, downright horrible, but Jimmy Howard is back so it will go from the absolute worst to only the worst.

With Howard’s return, the organization decided that waiving Eric Comrie, who was recently acquired, was the best plan of attack, not at all. He played all of the games with the Red Wings, losing both starts, allowing nine goals on sixty-six shots with a 4.28 GAA which is rough, to say the least.

So essentially, the Red Wings traded Vili Saarijärvi to the Arizona Coyotes, and since they waived Comrie, they gave him away. Now, Saarijärvi has not panned out as he was supposed to, but why would the organization give up on a defenseman prospect when the current defense core is weak, and the prospects should help rebuild that.

Giving up on Saarijärvi seemed like a pure mistake when the goaltender that was acquired lasted all of three games before they decided to simply give him away on waivers.

It’s beyond ludicrous to give away a prospect, whether he was not performing as well as the team hoped or not. Saarijärvi may have been a late bloomer, and giving up on him just seemed to be pretty foolish.

Think about this, Nick Jensen was a late-blooming defenseman, no Norris Trophy candidate, but a bottom four defenseman who can play a specific role for a team and best-case scenario Saarijärvi could have been that guy.

Instead, Yzerman has decided it was better to give him away after losing Comrie on waivers. So with two roster moves the Red Wings gave away Comrie and Saarijärvi only to gain Jimmy Howard back off the injured reserve.

I believe in the Yzer-plan and will give Yzerman a chance to get “his guys” and “his regime” instilled throughout the organization, but that was just plain mindless. Not to mention the Oliwer Kaski for Kyle Wood trade that was even more of a foolish deal after dumping Saarijärvi, but time will tell.

Yzerman has this year to figure things out and get the Red Wings hockey operations converted to his ways, but eventually, there has to be some competition.
