What is a year without Detroit Tigers rumors regarding Matthew Boyd? Kick-off 2020 with some news about the Tigers “ace” and what could happen before the season even starts.

Any Tigers fan will remember the 2019 season that was riddled with trade rumors about Matthew Boyd starting from the beginning of the year. Ultimately, Boyd would not get moved; he would stay put, even after so many teams were rumored to be “close to a deal” with the Detroit Tigers, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

Detroit ultimately held on to him, and the rumors are being fueled again to kick off the 2020 year.

This year it seems that the Los Angeles Angels are the leading suitor to kick things off for trade rumors. Boyd was seemingly going to be moved to the Angels who are looking to add to their rotation. The Angels missed out on signing starting pitchers Stephen Strasburg and Gerrit Cole this offseason and are looking to bring in an electric arm to their rotation.

More from Detroit Jock City

The Tigers ace is Boyd, and Boyd was atrocious to finish out the 2019 season. Boyd finished off the 2019 season with a 9-12 record, 4.56 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 238 strikeouts over the course of 185.1 innings pitched.

March, April, and May started well for Boyd, who had a 2.87 ERA with a 5-4 record. For the rest of the season, Boyd would be 4-8 with a horrific ERA. But it seems that he is still drawing trade interest before the 2020 season.

With his value dropping after the rough end to the 2019 season, Boyd could still draw teams in like the Angels who are trying to round out their rotation. The Angels are rumored to have been offering Brandon Marsh in the trade talks. Marsh is a twenty-two-year-old outfielder who is the second-ranked prospect within the Angels organization. Marsh was hitting above .300 at the Double-A level in the 2019 season.

It may be too good to be accurate, but the Tigers may be able to add to their young crop of outfield prospects if they can move Boyd to the Angels for Marsh. The Tigers are listening to offers for Boyd, and being able to move him may be the right move. If Avila can get the Angels to pull the trigger and give up Marsh, it should be a no brainer for the Tigers.

For the time being, it seems that the Detroit Tigers are at least active in listening to offers for Boyd, which is progress. Hopefully, Avila can get the job done in the front office if the offer presents itself.
