Red Wings: Three Players To Move At The Trade Deadline
By Tyler Kotila
Jimmy Howard was the starting goalie coming into this season, but Jonathan Bernier has since taken over that role and maybe one of the players who gets moved at the deadline.
Saving the most intriguing for last brings it to Jonathan Bernier. Now, thinking about this in October or November would be ludicrous; he was terrible. Now his record is not the prettiest, his numbers are mediocre, but looking at his splits from the more recent past shows improvement.

On the season as a whole, Bernier is 9-12-2 with a .903 save percentage and a 3.04 goals-against average. However, over eight games in December, Bernier was 3-4-1 with a .927 save percentage and a 2.47 goals-against average. The splits are in his favor after a rough start for the Red Wings, and he could add value to a contending team’s goaltending crew.
Bernier is not like the others in terms of being a rental, he would be a commitment by a team for next season as well, but the insurance may not be the worst thing. Organizations like the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are trying to pursue a playoff berth, could use the goaltending depth with an injured starter. If Yzerman can find a team that bites and is looking for that goaltender who handcuffs their starter and allows them to pursue a postseason run without worry, he may find a deal.
There’s no sure bet that anyone would bite, being that, it is Bernier, who has not been impressive since joining the Red Wings. However, if a team is in the market for a goaltender to strengthen their core, Bernier is a cheap option.
The bigger question that should be being asked is if Yzerman will be able to find a suitor before the deadline and if Bernier can keep up this level of play.
