Detroit Tigers: Mike Fiers facing scrutiny as scandal whistleblower
By Tyler Kotila
The baseball world has been lit ablaze this week with all of the news about the Houston Astros scandal and manager firings, but a former Detroit Tigers pitcher is now under scrutiny. Mike Fiers, the public whistleblower for the Astros, has been under some scrutiny for coming out about the details.
Another former Detroit Tigers player is involved with this cheating scandal surrounding the Houston Astros and all of baseball. Mike Fiers, former Tigers starter, was the whistleblower for this entire situation, but with punishments being handed out, one analyst, in particular, has taken an issue with it.
ESPN Analyst and New York Mets advisor Jessica Mendoza recently commented on how Fiers went public and that it was terrible to go out and bring this issue to the public. “To go public with it and call them out and start all of this, it’s hard to swallow.”
First off, that is a HORRIBLE take; essentially, after listening to her statement, which can be found above, it should leave fans confused. Mendoza argues that Fiers should warn his teammates with the Oakland Athletics, but should not have gone to the public with these things and start all of this chaos. Rather than facing scrutiny or being criticized, the former Tiger should be commended.
Even if this sort of thing is commonplace among the league, it does not belong. The unfair advantages being provided are not beneficial for the game, and Fiers did a good thing by finally bringing this up to the public.
On top of the camera incident that was investigated that stemmed from Fiers, the latest developments start to solidify this as one of the worst scandals in the game since the “Black Sox” 100 years ago.
With rumors that Astros sluggers José Altuve and Alex Bregman were using devices that buzzed to help them identify pitch types coming out, this scandal gets worse and worse as time goes on. Fiers blew the whistle on something that started as a pretty serious issue but has evolved into a major scandal, and there is no reason to blame Fiers, rather commend him.
Since the findings of the investigation have come out, the league has seen one general manager get fired. The Astros forfeit four total draft picks in the first and second round over the next two years. The Astros being given the maximum fine, and three managers have lost their jobs.
Anyone who believes that Fiers did something wrong by coming out about this needs to understand; he tried to “keep it off the books” internally and talk to people, he decided to go to the league, and he was brushed off until he went public about it.
Coincidentally, Fiers blows the whistle on the whole scenario, and it gets this crazy, and yet who remains silent?
Another former Tiger Justin Verlander, who has still not voiced his thoughts on anything. Players around the league have been active on social media regarding the situation, speaking on the matter, but Verlander and the majority of Astros players have been silent.
