When you think of All-Time great goaltenders, the first name that likely comes to mind is Detroit Red Wings great Terry Sawchuk.  How cool is this, the film ‘Goalie’ the true story of Terry Sawchuk is coming to a theatre near you.

Terry Sawchuk is, without a doubt, the best goaltender in Detroit Red Wings history.  His number one remains suspended high above the ice in Little Caesars Arena, exactly where it should.  Sawchuk played 14 of his 21 NHL seasons with the Red Wings.

Terry enjoyed 350 of his 445 career wins with the Red Wings.  Sawchuk won the Vezina Trophy awarded to the league’s top goaltender four times throughout his career. He also won the rookie of the year award in 1950, producing a 44-13-13 record that included 11 shutouts, logging 4200 minutes between the pipes showcasing an incredible 1.97 goals-against average.  Oddly enough, there was no such thing as backup goaltenders in those days.  Goaltenders were complete warriors.

It was a time when the players rode the rails from city to city.  It gave us the term beer league that remains today, as players regularly indulged in a few brown bottles while playing cards waiting for the train to arrive at their next destination.

It was a time when goaltenders didn’t wear masks.  You’ve all seen that famous photo of Terry Sawchuk with all the scars and stitches on his face.  It was a perception of what the wounds and a lengthy zipper-like 400 stitches would look like if they weren’t all healed.  A look at what the on-ice battle wounds would all appear like at once.

Terry holds numerous Detroit Red Wings goaltending records, many of which will likely never be broken.  He recorded 12 shutouts in a season three different times in his Red Wings career.  He totaled 85 as a Wing and 103 overall throughout his career. His 305 wins, 734 games played are both franchise records that will, in all likelihood, survive until the end of time.

Sawchuk, unfortunately, passed away much to young at the age of 40, but his legacy will live forever in the hockey community and, more importantly, throughout Metro Detroit.
