Detroit Lions: Ten Free Agents to target this offseason
By Bob Heyrman
If the Detroit Lions are expected to compete for the NFC North division title next season, they will need to make a splash in free agency along with hitting a home run in this year’s NFL draft. Here are ten players general manager Bob Quinn needs to set his sights on next week.
As of now, the NFL free agency period officially opens on March 18th at 4 PM Est. Teams are permitted to contact pending free agents starting Monday, March 16th. It’s almost a two-day recruiting effort for teams who hope to have the pen to paper with their recruits on Wednesday afternoon. The Detroit Lions have plenty of problems and not many solutions at the moment when you look up and down their current roster.
Last week we completed and published our first mock draft since the conclusion of the NFL combine. That can be found here. This article won’t completely complement that mock draft; understanding teams can’t bank on securing a rookie in the draft. There are no guarantees said player would be there when the Detroit Lions are on the clock. This is also the problem with having the NFL Draft after the free agency period has already occurred. Why not have the draft and then free agency the following week like the NHL?
It would really benefit organizations if they had to opportunity to fill-out their roster with the free agency period after they’ve selected their rookies.
