FS Devin McCourty

The New England Patriots recently picked up the team option on Devin’s twin brother Jason McCourty.  That may be enough leverage for the Patriots to keep Devin in town.  McCourty is one of the Patriots’ top defenders.

Last season Devin McCourty recorded a spectacular 89.0 coverage grade (PFF).  A top coverage, center field-type free safety – isn’t that what the doctor ordered for the Detroit Lions?

I know, we’re sick of hearing about all the former New England Patriots, but there is nothing wrong with trying to add an elite safety.  McCourty worked hand and hand with Matt Patricia during his days as the defensive coordinator; there wouldn’t be a learning period.  It’s a true plug and play situation.  That alone bodes well for the teams’ success.

Imagine having a player like McCourty on the back end bringing along the likes of Tracy Walker, who has the makeup to be a future star and Will Harris.  The jury is still out on Harris, but he has the potential to take a leap forward over the next year.

If McCourty was unable to find an agreement to return to the Patriots and Detroit were able to lure hi into town, the organization could slap a “c” on his jersey immediately.  These are the types of players the Detroit Lions need on their roster if they have any hopes of finally turning the corner, eventually becoming a respectable franchise again.

Last season McCourty recorded 48 tackles, 5 interceptions, and forced 2 fumbles.  He patrolled the secondary yielding a spectacular 44.4% passer rating against while only allowing a career-best 130 passing yards against when targeted.

The 32-year-old is not a long-term option, but his wisdom may pay off in waves.  He’s very versatile, can play as a single high safety, or as a slot corner and even lock up with NFL tight ends.  He’s undoubtedly about to decline, but if last season is any indication, he’s got plenty left to give.
