Detroit Red Wings: A check-up on the organization’s goaltending prospects
By Tyler Kotila
Carter Gylander, 40 games with the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the AJHL
Perhaps the “dark horse” goalie of the group is Carter Gylander, who is still very young and not even in his college years yet. Only eighteen years old, Gylander is still in his Juinors years of eligibility and poised to play college hockey.
Gylander was drafted in the seventh round of last summers’ 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He stands 6-foot-5, weighing in at 179-pounds playing the previous three seasons for the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).
This past season, Gylander turned some heads in the AJHL, playing in forty games for the Crusaders, where he posted a 34-5-0 record with a 2.07 GAA with a .924 SV% on the season. His performance would earn him the honors for the top goaltender.

In the 2018-19 season, Gylander posted exceptional numbers as well but was not in net the whole season as the starter like he was this past season.
Gylander would play in 22 games on the season, posting a 16-4 record with a 2.43 GAA and a .915 SV% for the Crusaders.
This upcoming season, Gylander will make a jump to the NCAA level, where he is committed to being the netminder for Colgate University.
Gylander is an investment of a draft pick, but his excellence in the AJHL should peak the interest of Red Wings fans. The long term investment would be worth the wait if Gylander pans out
With any luck, Gylander’s excellence will continue at the NCAA level, and he can make the jump to the AHL smoothly. The Red Wings will not be bringing in Gylander any time soon since he is only eighteen years old, but in the long term, he may be the goaltender of the future.
Gylander, Larsson, and Petruzzelli are just a few of the goaltenders who have a shot at becoming the Detroit Red Wings goaltender of the future, and each of them had a quite different 2019-20 season.
