It’ goes without saying, but it’s an unusual offseason for the Detroit Lions and the rest of the NFL.  The team could still use a free agent or two, but they need to be fussy doing so.

With the threat of a shortened season and a bare-bones offseason summer program, it’s vital to sign plug and play veteran players who are either familiar with the Detroit Lions scheme or have the ability to learn it quickly.

If the NFL season can trek on as planned, it may be a year we see a more veteran ball club with a returning coaching staff benefit over the organizations with a new coaching staff and front office implemented this offseason.

It will also be difficult for the young rookies to make a significant impact with their new teams having little to no offseason comradery.  The Detroit Lions enjoyed what we consider to be a very successful draft in 2020, but it’s a draft class we may not see the fruits of their labor until 2021.

When you consider the uncertainty of the 2021 salary cap, the Detroit Lions should not rush to sign any free agents now to lucrative long-term deals, although they have plenty of cap space to do so.  Detroit is in a position to be in good shape beyond this season, while other franchises won’t be so lucky next season if the team cap is frozen next year or even decreases.

That being said, here are three free agents the Detroit Lions should consider bringing in with just a one-year commitment.
