If the Detroit Red Wings want to add a defenseman to their list of overlooked players,  defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk is one to check in on.

The Red Wings could also scoop up a bargain defenseman in the form of right-handed shooting Trevor van Riemsdyk. He is 28 years old and has played his last three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes.

He broke into the league with the Chicago Blackhawks back in the 2014-15 season, spending three years there before being selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft and then traded to the Hurricanes.

This past season van Riemsdyk played 49 games where he scored only one goal, had seven assists, totaling a menial eight points. He was minus-seven on the season but had a 54.0 CF%, which was 1.0% better than the team average.

The 2019-20 season may not have been his best, which is even more reason for teams to let him fly under the radar.

The Red Wings could swing in, sign him at a bargain cost, and come away with a decent addition to their defensive core.

While he will not provide a ton of offense or even be a top-pairing defenseman, he could be brought in on a contract similar to Patrik Nemeth.

The Red Wings could sign van Riemsdyk as an addition to their middle paring or third pairing. There are plenty of free agents to consider, and these are just three who could get overlooked.

The Red Wings will have to sit down and figure out what plan of action is best and which players to target, but these three are three to keep tabs on.
