Detroit Tigers: Victor Reyes settling into outfield during 2020 season
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Tigers have seen Victor Reyes settle in and have an exceptional 2020 season with the organization.
Going into the 2020 Detroit Tigers season, the hope was that Victor Reyes was going to blossom into quite the outfielder for the organization. After he pieced together an impressive 2019 season, the hope was he would improve in the 2020 season.
Even though it is not a full 60-game season, the Tigers have still seen Reyes make some improvements at the plate that have seen him become a solid hitter. His 2019 season was a 69 game campaign that was not a straight stint, whereas, in 2020, he has been a mainstay.
The Tigers have put Reyes in the outfield where he has been able to succeed in all three spots in the outfield. He has made changes in the batters’ box that have seen him find success once again in 2020.

Reyes has played in 52 games in the 2020 season while sitting out three of the Tigers contests throughout the season.
He has been able to drive the ball and get on base for this organization.
In the 52 games of 2020, Reyes has hit .283/.320/.408 with four home runs and 14 RBI on the season.
While Reyes’s .308/.336/.431 with three home runs and 25 RBI during 2019, he was not a mainstay in the lineup like he is in 2020.
Reyes has also been able to grade out well in some of the categories on his Baseball Savant profile. He sits in the 77th percentile for exit velocity as well as the 74th percentile for hard-hit percentage.
If anything, Reyes still needs to work on his “jump” in the outfield, sitting well below the league average for Outfield Jump, according to Baseball Savant. However, Reyes has a plus sprint speed and a plus Outs Above Average (OAA) rating.
In 2020 Reyes has improved; he has shown that he belongs in the big leagues and has been a stellar get from the Rule Five Draft back in 2017. The now 25-five-year-old has proven he deserves a spot in the Tigers outfield.
The Tigers have had an interesting season, calling up players all over the field, from starting pitcher Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal in the monumental call-up or even Daz Cameron, who gets to try and prove he belongs alongside Reyes in the outfield.
With the success Reyes has displayed, there is no reason why he has not earned a starting spot for the Tigers. On the other hand, Christin Stewart has proven he does not belong in the Tigers lineup, struggling immensely, earning himself an option to Toledo’s alternate training site.
The Detroit Tigers need to ensure that Victor Reyes gets his chance to play consistently in the Tigers outfield beyond the 2020 season.
