The Detroit Red Wings selected forward Lucas Raymond with the fourth overall selection in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft to kick things off.

Having the fourth overall selection, there was some speculation that Detroit Red Wings General Manager (GM) Steve Yzerman was going to turn some heads. In reality, he would stick with predictions and select prospect forward Lucas Raymond from Frolunda HC in Sweden.

Raymond was ranked anywhere from fourth to about eighth, depending on which mock draft or ranking list was mentioned. Raymond’s upside as a forward makes him a lethal prospect for the Red Wings organization.

He will now join an exciting crop of prospects the Red Wings are building between last year’s draft and now this year. Last year was the shock of German defenseman Moritz Seider, who was taken with the sixth overall selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

More from Detroit Red Wings

Raymond will come into the organization and develop as a playmaking forward who shares some similarities to current Toronto Maple Leafs standout star Mitch Marner.

The eighteen-year-old comes from Sweden, possibly renewing the line of Swedish talent for the Red Wings.

During the 2019-20 season, Raymond was able to notch four goals and six assists for ten points, over 33 games with Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).  So far in 2020-21 with Frolunda, Raymond has four games, notching one goal and one assist for a total of two points.

For the time being, Raymond will be able to keep developing while playing over in Frolunda. Yzerman will now sit back as the rest of the first round continues. He could place a few calls and try to move back into the first round to select the goaltender Yaroslav Askarov later in the first round.
