Detroit Red Wings: 3 things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving
By Tyler Kotila
Reason #3: The Detroit Red Wings have plenty of cap room to work with during the 2020-21 season.
The Detroit Red Wings have already had a phenomenal offseason, as was covered in “Reason #1” of the article, but what about this could lead to more success in the 2020-21 season. General Manager (GM) Steve Yzerman has been rolling through his Yzerplan page by page since being brought in.
However, as the 2020-21 season approaches, the Red Wings are going to not only make improvements off the ice but have the cap space to make some things happen. If Yzerman can swing trades to pick up cap space from a team like the New York Islanders, he will be able to.
He could make trades where he adds a sweetener with more than enough cap space to do so. The way things stand, the Red Wings have $9,538,611 in cap space, according to CapFriendly‘s estimates. Yzerman has already swung a trade like this with the New York Rangers for Marc Staal as a part of the masterful offseason.

Beyond having cap space to make trades that require a team having a lot of cap space, Yzerman has rentals galore.
Based on the offseason, Yzerman could ship off assets at the deadline and likely bring in a nice haul of draft picks or prospects to further along this rebuild.
Some of the signings from this offseason, like Bobby Ryan, Jon Merrill, Vladislav Namestnikov, or even possibly Troy Stecher, could get shipped out on their one- or two-year deals.
The shorter-term deals might be attractive to teams looking for that last-minute addition for a playoff run. Trades like this could trickle in all the way up until the trade deadline comes and goes so it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
The Red Wings will be able to go into the 2020-21 season, looking to continue furthering their rebuild while also seeing improvements on the ice. It should be an interesting season as it unfolds; Yzerman will likely be making moves once again.
The Detroit Red Wings fans should be thankful for Steve Yzerman and thankful for the organization’s position in terms of its cap space and assets that could net trade returns.
Happy Thanksgiving!
