Michigan State Spartans basketball defeats Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame traveled to the Breslin Center for a Saturday night contest. From all three Michigan State teams that played on Saturday, the basketball game result is the least surprising.  Saying head coach Tom Izzo was going to coach his team to a win at home in November against an unranked team is not exactly a “hot take.”

As the game started, both teams were trading off baskets, and neither was really pulling away from the other. There was a TV-timeout with 7:12 left in the first half, and something Izzo said must have fired up the players. At that point in the game, the Fighting Irish were up 26-22 over the Spartans.

Michigan State would then go on to finish the half with a 17-0 run and ended up leading 39-26.  They would start the second half on a 9-0 run and hold Notre Dame scoreless from the 7:12 mark in the first half until the 18:05 mark in the second half. Michigan State held onto a lead for the entire game.

More from Detroit Jock City

They got a nice spark from Rocket Watts, who came off the bench. In 20 minutes, he scored 13 points while shooting 3-for-5 from three.

If they make a deep run this year, Watts will most certainly have to be a contributor.

Michigan State is traveling to Duke on Tuesday to face them in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Last year when they played Duke, it did not go very well.

The Blue Devils came into East Lansing and handed them an 87-75 loss, and the game never really felt that close.

It will be a nice test to see how good this team really is early in the year. Overall this is definitely a day that felt far overdue.

Getting to see all three of these teams take home victories in their respective match-ups is an awesome sight for fans.

All of the local professional teams feel like they are or should be rebuilding (looking at you, Sheila, time to start it over), and there has not been much to cheer for this year.

Hopefully, all of the Michigan State Spartans teams can use this incredible Saturday tilt as a building block going forward.
