Detroit Red Wings: Top 10 prospects to track in 2021
By Bob Heyrman
Defenseman: Jared McIsaac
Yet another former second-round pick in Jared McIsaac makes the 2021 Detroit Red Wings top prospects list.
It’s been a tough row to hoe for defenseman Jared McIsaac after dealing with a string of injuries over the past couple of seasons. McIsaac had been sidelined with a right shoulder injury that required surgery before the start of the 2019-20 season.
The 20-year old defender suffered a similar injury to his left shoulder; this past fall, which will have the Detroit Red Wings prospect on the shelf potentially until April. By the time McIsaac returns to the ice, he’ll likely just be getting back into the swing of things only to see the 2021 season come to a close.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Detroit Red Wings loaned McIsaac to a team in Sweden where he could see some ice, but the injury derailed those valuable development minutes.
The Red Wings had high hopes for the 6-foot-1 defender when they used the 36th pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Level Draft on his services. McIsaac excelled playing with the Halifax Mooseheads and Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL, recording 160 points in 205 games.
During the 2018-19 season with Halifax, McIsaac was extremely impressive, notching 16 points in 22 playoff games.
After he’s fully recovered from his most recent shoulder surgery, the Detroit Red Wings will surely like to see McIsaac cut his teeth with the Grand Rapid Griffins before getting a look at what he can do at the NHL level.
