With that said, the situation isn’t that simple. Deshaun Watson is not in a contract year. That means the only way he can be acquired is via a trade with Houston. I know what you’re thinking:
Stafford needs to be traded, so why not a deal with the Texans?
The answer is because both quarterbacks deserve a lot in return for a trade. Their both highly talented and are likely to be equally touted by many teams.
There have been conflicting reports as to where Watson himself wants to go. Some say his preferred trade destination is the New York Jets; others are saying the exact opposite. The one blurb staying consistent is that Watson wants out of Houston no matter what is talked about or who is brought in as the next head coach.
As @mortreport reported on ESPN’s Postseason NFL Countdown, the Texans' head coaching hire is not expected to change Deshaun Watson's thinking. He still is expected to want out of Houston, no matter who the head coach is, per sources.
