Detroit Lions: 5 teams that need to trade for Matthew Stafford
By Bob Heyrman
New Orleans Saints
This makes so much sense to me, but it seems nearly impossible to pull-off. Stafford walking into New Orleans in Sean Payton‘s offense could be lethal. No, Stafford is not a better quarterback than Drew Brees as a whole, but he’s a much-better passer today than Brees.

We saw Brees’ dead-arm just a week ago in the Saints playoff matchup with Tampa Bay. The Saints were forced to bring in Jamies Winston to throw a deep touchdown using a gimmick play where Winston started the play lining up out of the slot.
Four of the Tampa Bay defenders all flowed towards Alvin Kamara, leaving Tre’Quan Smith screaming down the seam wideout for the easy touchdown. The fact that Payton needed Winston to heave the longball tells you everything you needed to know about Brees’ issues last season. It wasn’t all age; Brees was battling a plethora of injuries, one being a torn rotator cuff.
With Brees now firmly setting sail into retirement, the Saints could use a quarterback not named Taysom Hill or Winston. Insert Stafford into this Saints offense headlined by Michael Thomas and Kamara; the group will likely be better than they have in quite some time.
Unfortunately, I don’t see this marriage being possible for various reasons. The Saints’ organization currently sits in the absolute worst cap position throughout the NFL, heading into 2021. In fact, they are a whopping $105 million OVER the cap.
Combine that with owning the 28th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft won’t provide what it would take to land Stafford in a trade.
I added the Saints understanding it would be a long-shot but didn’t want to overlook Kelly Stafford praising receiver Michael Thomas for gutting it out this season despite being injured, knowing Brees would likely be hanging up the cleats at season’s end. Although unlikely to happen, I could see New Orleans is a destination the Stafford’s would enjoy.
I’m sure Payton would love to add Stafford; I don’t see how it could be accomplished.
