It has been eighteen years since Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera has come into Major League Baseball. Since then, he has done some shifting around positionally, and it seemed his time as an everyday first baseman is done.

However, Cabrera has been pleading with new manager A.J. Hinch to allow him to return to first base once again on a more consistent basis. This idea has its positives and negatives, so take a larger look at this and decide whether this is a good or bad idea in your own eyes.

Cabrera is still on his 8-year, $248 million mega-contract that has him on the roster through the 2023 season. He is slated to make $30 million in 2021. For the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Cabrera is slated to make $32 million.

He has not quite performed like the hitter he once was, but injuries have plagued a couple of his seasons. He is still one of the game’s best, most skilled hitters. He has just been aging and entering the downturn of his career at 37 years old.

The Detroit Tigers need to be cautious with moving Miguel Cabrera back into the field on a nearly daily basis.

But entering his age 38 season, he wants to return to the field. Take a look at some pros and cons of Cabrera returning to first base in 2021. There are reasons to support it and a few reasons against it, decide for yourself where you stand.

Ultimately it will come down to whatever Hinch decides, but fans can still ponder whether it is the best decision or not for this organization. Amid a rebuild, it may not be of the utmost importance, but it is something to think about for sure.
