Detroit Red Wings: Could Marc Staal be flipped at the trade deadline?
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Red Wings will start moving towards the trade deadline and deciding which players might be shopped on the trade block. Defenseman Marc Staal is one of the Red Wings candidates to be moved as the trade deadline comes into view down the line.
When the Detroit Red Wings acquired Staal they also received a second-round draft pick from the New York Rangers. That pick will come into play during the upcoming 2021 NHL Entry Draft which Steve Yzerman is hoping is pushed back to allow time for more scouting.
However, there is a possible and plausible option where Staal is moved to a contender and the return on this Staal trade grows. As it stands, to get Staal, the Red Wings offered future considerations, if they flip Staal for more, they will have traded future considerations for a 2021 second-round pick, plus whatever Staal nets.
That seems like quite a win in the books for Yzerman who is still rebuilding the Red Wings organization. The way it stands, there have been some rumors that the Boston Bruins are in the market for someone like Staal.
The Detroit Red Wings might have to consider trading Marc Staal at (or before) the trade deadline.

When the Red Wings acquired Staal it was thought of as more of a sweetener deal where the Red Wings added someone who will just be logging minutes.
However, to the surprise of many, Staal has somehow played his way into a level where he could be traded.
In 2020-21, Staal has played in 21 games for the Red Wings where he has two goals and two assists for four total points. He is a minus-eight in terms of plus/minus.
He has been better than most would probably have expected so far, which is why he may be drawing interest.
Also, when it comes to Corsi For (CF%), Staal has a 48.6 CF% which is just a notch above the Red Wings team’s average.
More of a defensive asset, Staal is going to be one of the players who teams might target.
Obviously, Staal can add a defensive boost to a team that is looking to add cheap defenseman depth. Moving Staal would be a steal for the Red Wings and being able to net any sort of return just makes the initial trade even better.
So as the trade deadline continues to get closer, keep an eye on the Detroit Red Wings and on Marc Staal to see if he ultimately gets moved.
