It’s been anything but a typical couple of years.  We’re currently in mid-June, yet the third round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is just nicely underway.  Usually, by now, we’ve already seen a team parade around the ice after winning the Cup, as fans start to peak at pending free agents.  Since the Detroit Red Wings haven’t been relevant in a few years, and the offseason tends to be the most exciting time of year.

I know; it sounds all too familiar for Lions, Pistons, and Tigers fans of late.  It can be taxing when all four of the cities’ major professional sports teams are rebuilding simultaneously, but here we are.

Instead of the usual July 1st, the NHL’s free agency period will begin on July 28th in 2021 due to COVID-19.

That being said, I don’t expect Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings to overspend in free agency this summer, understanding the franchise is still a couple of years away from making a postseason run.

Here are three defenders the Detroit Red Wings should look to add in free agency.

Yzerman will be looking for high-character pieces to plug into this Red Wings lineup to help the youthful roster develop.  The Red Wings will also be looking for NHL players that can help in the short term, perhaps reclamation projects or pieces that can be moved at the NHL trade deadline for future assets.
