Detroit Lions: Don’t worry about Jared Goff, start focusing on the defense

Not to state the obvious, but although there is a completely new regime in place, don’t expect the Detroit Lions to suddenly become a playoff team or contender overnight.

When evaluating a team’s overall potential, we typically start with the quarterback position for good reason.  Like the NBA is a star-driven league, the NFL is a quarterback-driven league.

The league is catered to the quarterback position with an abundance of rules that are put in place to protect the leagues’ investment. As a result, not many people show up to the football field to see Chad Henne; we’d rather catch a glimpse of Patrick Mahomes playing the position.

While there are plenty of questions surrounding the Detroit Lions heading into the 2021 season regarding how well Jared Goff will perform, knowing a host of below-average pass catchers are around him. Still, I have plenty of other concerns, mostly surrounding the defense.

Sure the Lions have a stellar offensive line that will aid offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn’s run-heavy offense. Still, when push comes to shove, Goff will need to elevate the play of Breshard Perriman Tyrell Williams, Quintez Cephus, along with rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Anthony Lynn’s play-action offense is fine and dandy if the Detroit Lions have a lead, but I don’t expect that to be the situation very often in 2021.
