Detroit Tigers select pitcher Ty Madden in Competitive Balance Round A
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Tigers have made their second pick of the 2021 MLB First-Year Amateur Player Draft. After rumors of a pitcher-heavy draft class coming, the trend continues with Ty Madden being selected with the 32nd overall draft pick.
The Detroit Tigers used their competitive balance round A choice on the Texas Longhorns right-handed starting pitcher. The right-handed arm is another player to add to the organization, and the hope is that he pans out, possibly even being future trade bait.

Some may view this pick as a real steal since Madden was supposed to be a for sure first-rounder. Madden was great for the Longhorns in 2021, making 18 great starts.
He pitched to a 2.45 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, and was able to punch out 137 strikeouts over 113.2 innings pitched.
The right-handed pitcher uses a high-velocity fastball that works up to 99 mph with sink, according to MLB dot com’s report.
His slider has tight-late break and is more effective than a slower curveball with less ability to land it for strikes. Also shows a feel for a changeup with some fade.
The Detroit Tigers select Ty Madden with the 32nd overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.
There’s plenty to like from Madden, especially since he was ranked ninth on the MLB pre-draft rankings list. It might be a steal for the organization. While the fanbase continues to riot after missing out on prep shortstop Marcelo Mayer, there is still plenty of upside with the team’s two picks on day one.
The Tigers added two great talents to the organization, and development will play a big factor for these two. Madden will be looking to make a quick rise towards the big leagues to join a rotation of the future that appears to be quite exciting even with Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal already in the big leagues.
An early prediction after just picking him is that Madden will be able to follow a path of Mize/Manning, making a quick rise in the minors, making some noise on the way.
Welcome to the Motor City, Ty Madden!
