Ville Koivunen – LW/RW of Kärpät (Liiga)

The Red Wings should be going after forward Ville Koivunen, who hails from Oulu, Finland. Koivunen is a 6-foot, 160-pound forward who has plenty of skill. He’s quick and instinctive with scoring upside to pair with that.

He plays for Kärpät U20, where he logged 38 games on the season. He scored 23 goals and added 26 assists for 49 total points on the season. Koivunen also represented the Finnish team at World Juniors, where he had four goals and six assists for ten points over seven games played.

The Finnish forward is a left-handed shot who can play both wingers. There’s an under-the-radar feel to Koivunen. He’s obviously known and going to be selected in the draft sooner than later on day two, but he could be an underrated pick who rises to a higher ceiling than anticipated.

The scoring upside is there, as was mentioned, but he plays a complete game. He may not be an overwhelming scorer, passer, etc. But he excels in many areas and is a complete player. Wherever Koivunen ends up, the hope will be that they can help him take the next step in each area of his game to be a real all-around threat.

If the opportunity presents itself on day two, Koivunen should be a player the Red Wings look to select.
