Detroit Red Wings: 5 prospects that fans should be most excited about
By Tyler Kotila
Forward Elmer Söderblom
Now, this one may surprise some, but Elmer Söderblom is someone that Detroit Red Wings fans need to be on the lookout for. In Yzerman’s first draft at the helm of the Red Wings, he selected Söderblom with the team’s sixth-round pick.
While a sixth-round pick is not going to have the same upside as Lucas Raymond or Moritz Seider, he is unique in his own way. He could very well become a draft steal and work out to be quite the selection by the Red Wings.
Söderblom is a Swedish forward with a left-handed shot, but his frame is what makes him unique. He’s 6-foot-8 and weighs in at 238 pounds, one massive hockey player. The even more impressive part is even with a huge frame, Södeblom is mobile and a good skater given his stature.
He moves well and stays in control of himself for a big boy which is awesome for his future in hockey. In 2020-21, Söderblom did not have a lot to show for on the stat sheet, but with that much size, it’s hard not to like him.
He’s still got time to get to North America and try to earn a crack at the AHL and NHL levels. He needs to show more offensive upside if he is truly going to become a draft steal out of the sixth round.
For the Red Wings faithful, keep an eye on Söderblom, who is fun to watch on the ice with his large stature and clean abilities on the ice even at such a large size.
