After hearing that the Detroit Tigers could be in the market to become big spenders in free agency this upcoming winter, I couldn’t help but start sifting through some big-named players that may find themselves dawning the Old English D.

Detroit Tigers president and CEO Christopher Ilitch recently mentioned that the organization appears close to turning the corner. Spending in free agency will become vital if the franchise has hopes of stringing together another championship run.

As Jon Morosi points out, the Detroit Tigers have been the third-best ball club since June 14th in the American League.

Shocking, I know.

Four rookies lead the team in Casey Mize, Akil Baddoo, Eric Haase, and Tarik Skubal.  It’s a youthful core with plenty of veteran counterparts such as a rejuvenated Miguel Cabrera, Robbie Grossman, Jonathan Schoop, and Jeimer Candelario, providing stability throughout the lineup.

The Detroit Tigers are expected to spend in free agency over the winter.

Although the young Detroit Tigers are enjoying a fruitful summer, they have a glaring need at shortstop.

I also feel the Tigers should be in the market to add a middle-of-the-rotation starting pitcher and a reliable bullpen arm or two to really solidify their roster.

The organization recently locked up pending free agent Jonathan Schoop to a two-year deal worth $15 million.  Now it is time to address some other needs.

Here are six players the organization should target in free agency this winter.
