The Detroit Tigers are continuing to move through their rebuild. The latest move was to promote Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson to Triple-A to play with the Toledo Mud Hens. The Tigers also promoted Ryan Kreidler to Triple-A in the move as well.

It’s been overshadowed by the other two names that went along with him, but the Detroit Tigers made a good choice with the promotion of Kreidler. According to MLB dot com’s list, he may not be a top prospect, but he is ranked 19th in the organization.

Kreidler comes from UCLA, where he played three years before being selected by the Tigers in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Amateur Player Draft. He logged time with the Norwich Sea Unicorns (fka… Connecticut Tigers) in 2019 before the pandemic.

In his first chance at pro-ball, Kreidler slashed .232/.307/.351 with 19 extra-base hits and 20 RBI over 60 games. The 2020 season was a wash due to the pandemic, but Kreidler bounced back in 2021 and has earned a promotion to Triple-A after a quality start at the Double-A level.

As was mentioned above, there is not nearly as much buzz around Kreidler as the others, but the Tigers are aiming to push him with this promotion. Promoting him to Triple-A will allow him to strut his stuff and see how he holds up against the next level of talent.

His time with the Erie Seawolves at the Double-A level lasted 88 games, where he slashed .256/.325/.429 with 15 home runs for 30 total extra-base hits, which have helped him plate 36 total runs on the year.

The unexpected boost in power has been great to see from the shortstop. He will focus on shortstop with the Mud Hens at the Triple-A level, while Spencer Torkelson primarily focuses on first and third base. Isaac Paredes is still there getting work in around the infield as well.

He’s off to quite the start so far in Toledo as well. Kreidler has logged two games, and over his first eight at-bats, he has picked up four hits, with two of them being home runs. He’s also added four RBI as well.

Quite the hot start for the young prospect who freshly arrived in the Mud Hens locker room. It’s good to see him get the bat going early; the hope will be that he can carry this on and through the end of the season.

It seems like the remainder of this year is going to be a test for Kreidler and the other Mud Hens, but this hot start bodes well for things early on.
