Detroit Red Wings prospect and freshly signed Jonatan Berggren.

One of the Detroit Red Wings’ more exciting youngsters is Jonatan Berggren, who is someone that fans should have their eyes on. The Swedish prospect is going to be new to the North American scene after spending every year prior over in Sweden.

Berggren played incredibly well in 2020-21 in what some would call a “break out” season.  He’s a second-round selection from the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, which means that he was a choice of Ken Holland’s.

It does seem that new GM Steve Yzerman has bought into Berggren as he is starting to look like quite the prospect. Especially after last season when Berggren played in 49 games for Skellefteå AIK of the SHL, scoring 12 goals and adding 33 assists 45 total points.

He’s a puck-moving forward who can make things happen offensively. He’s shown the ability to hold his own in the SHL in recent seasons, and the boost in production in 2020-21 should have the Red Wings faithful excited to see how he pans out.

The jump from the SHL over to the North American game is not easy. He will be sent to Grand Rapids and will not make the opening night roster, but he will need time to adjust and make the transition.

As training camp comes around, Berggren will get his first true taste of how things work in the NHL and will get his feet wet alongside NHL talent and future teammates with hopes of continuing at the same rate he was last year.
