Detroit Red Wings 2021-22 Opening Night preview and betting odds
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Red Wings are going to kick off their 2021-22 season against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Little Caesars Arena later tonight. They will get things going on a season that is expected to go much better than last year and keep the team moving in the right direction.
With the announcement of the Detroit Red Wings roster, nearly everything is ready and set to go for the 2021-22 season. The Red Wings will be kicking things off with a four-game homestand that starts against last year’s Stanley Cup Champions and the 2019-20 champions who are looking to three-peat.
It’s the house that General Manager (GM) Steve Yzerman built and is one that he is trying to recreate in parts here in Hockeytown. The Red Wings are engulfed in a rebuild, and opening against the Lightning will likely not bring a lot of expectation to win.
However, it’s the first game, and the Lightning came out of the gates looking slow and eventually frustrated after the Pittsburgh Penguins came out and attacked them for the first 40 minutes of that contest.
The Detroit Red Wings open up against the Tampa Bay Lightning, ironically.
The irony in opening up against the Lightning is from the fact that the Red Wings are trying to recreate that team in Detroit, as mentioned above. However, there’s plenty to be excited about, focusing on the Red Wings, with players like Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider making the roster out of training camp.
Nick Leddy joins the team’s defense core. Pius Suter and Mitchell Stephens are additions upfront. Alex Nedeljkovic is going to chase another Calder Trophy while between the pipes. There are new faces and good ones. They may not be a postseason contender yet, but they are certainly going to finish higher in the standings.
Opening Night can be tricky, and any team can come out on top. The opening night jitters can get to them. With the Lightning kicking off their season already, it seems like the Red Wings are going to be playing a team that started the season on a sour note after a championship banner hanging ceremony to start their Opening Night.
The Red Wings are going to have a lot to show fans, and opening up against the Lightning is going to be a phenomenal test for them. That being said…

Prediction: The Detroit Red Wings are going to look good on Opening Night, but it’s not going to be good enough. The Tampa Bay Lightning should cover the game Moneyline, but I’m not sold on the spread. The hope is that Nedeljkovic helps the Red Wings avoid giving up some goals, which means that the score should hypothetically be lower with two steady netminders. Vasilevskiy is coming off a rough game and is going to want to right the ship, expect a low-scoring game.
