The Detroit Lions are heading into Thanksgiving, matching up against the Chicago Bears. While the two team’s matched up in 2019 on Turkey Day with David Blough under center for the Lions, it was 2018 when (future Lion) Chase Daniel had a field day picking apart the Lions defense for the win.

Now, in 2021, it’s a similar situation (sort of) as the Bears will be starting a backup quarterback. This season the Bears have been trotting out Justin Fields as the starter and future of their organization. But on Thanksgiving, the Lions will be seeing a lot of Andy Dalton.

For the Lions, they are having some quarterback issues of their own. While Jared Goff is expected to make strides even in the short week after being on the sideline last weekend, Tim Boyle could be seeing some time under center as well.

The deja vu has to be setting in for Lions fans. It could be another year of the organization losing to a backup quarterback on Thanksgiving. Maybe special teams will roll out some fake punts or fake kicks like Matt Prater did a few years back.

The Detroit Lions may lose to a backup quarterback on Thanksgiving, again.

While saying Andy Dalton is a true backup is much different than Chase Daniel having a great day in 2018, it’s still not great. Dalton was a starting quarterback for the Bengals for nine seasons before ending up as Dak Prescott’s backup who took over after an injury.

Dalton is going to be going against the Lions’ defense which has not been incredibly horrible, given the injuries and players that have had to step up. Keep in mind; I’m describing a defense that is part of a team 0-9-1. However, since coming off of the bye week, the team has not been allowing a bunch of points as of late.

It’s something that could work in their favor on Thursday, with Dalton starting after weeks of being on the bench. While that’s good and great for the Lions’ defense, who have been fixing some of their lapses and being able to look better, the Lions’ offense is still putrid.

The Lions’ offense struggles to put points on the board, and with Goff’s health still a question, it could be another week of bleak output from the Lions’ offense. D’Andre Swift will be looking to carry the offense on his back once again.
