3 starting pitchers the Detroit Tigers should sign right now
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Tigers need to get busy in the free-agent market if they want to go out and land a quality free agent to batten down things on the pitching staff. Following the non-tender move of Matthew Boyd and the signing of Eduardo Rodríguez, it seems there is still room for another arm.
While it seems like the Detroit Tigers are not going to spend big, they need to go out and be smart. Adding in a few pieces on cost-efficient contracts is going to be a crucial piece of that. When it comes to the starting pitchers, they are likely going to go with veterans who can be gotten cheaply.
Whether it is a $5 million one-year contract or as little as a $1 million contract with a prove-me player as was seen last season, the Tigers need to do something. As it stands, the rotation looks as if this is how the rotation will shape up:
- Eduardo Rodríguez, LHP
- Casey Mize, RHP
- Tarik Skubal, LHP
- (Insert FA signing here)
- Matt Manning, RHP
The days of hoping this would come true are over; the Tigers have their rotation and are going to keep building from where it is. This season may be the “get over the hump” year, but with a solid addition for the number four spot, the Tigers can leave themselves in a good spot for the future.
The free-agent market is starting to see pieces fall, and as it stands, there are still many options out there, but the Detroit Tigers have to play it smart.
