Detroit Tigers, Dellin Betances

Taking a flier on Dellin Betances would be intriguing for the Detroit Tigers.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. When Dellin Betances was with the New York Yankees, he was seen as one of the premier setup men in the league. He’s a four-time all-star who has struggled immensely since departing the Yankees organization.

After things have gone downhill since 2019 and beyond, he would likely be a cheap option. He underwent shoulder surgery after an injury ended his 2021 season with just one inning under his belt. He has since recovered and has been rehabbing since August.

With the 2022 season being a fresh start for him, the Detroit Tigers should take a chance on the once-great reliever. He’s heading into his age 34 season and may still have some gas left in the tank.

If the Tigers want to try and gamble on a veteran, Betances may not be the worst option. He signed a $10 million contract with the New York Mets for the 2020 season that had a $6 million player option for the 2021 season. After a horrible 2020 season, he opted to try for better performance in 2021, though the injury halted that.

Given his last three years’ performance, it’s hard to think that Betances would be expensive. He could be a cheaper option that the Tigers could target with the hopes of him being able to find it, getting back to the player he was when he was with the Yankees.
