The Detroit Lions were pummeled by Broncos in Sunday’s 38-10 loss
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Lions would end up falling by 28 points in Sunday’s shellacking from the Denver Broncos. It was a 38-10 final score where the Broncos were able to go out and win one for Demaryius Thomas who passed away earlier this week in his home in Georgia.
This game was essentially over before it even started. The Detroit Lions virtually had no shot to win this game. Between the COVID-19 issues, the flu issues, and general injury issues the roster construction for this Sunday’s matchup was beyond subpar.
On top of that, the Broncos had extra motivation to win one for Thomas, in his honor. They even took the field with only 10 players on their first drive, leaving a spot open for the former Broncos wide receiver. A touching tribute that really showed this team was going to come out with some energy.
They surely did, running the ball left and right and through the Lions’ practice squad assembled defense. The Broncos running backs were the story of the Broncos’ offense. Melvin Gordon had 24 carries for 111 yards and two scores while Javonte Williams followed that up with 73 yards on 15 carries with a score and a receiving touchdown to his credit as well.
The Detroit Lions made silly mistakes that led to the blowout.
While the ailing Lions were missing personnel in all facets f the game, that’s no excuse for some of the boneheaded and silly mistakes. It’s the same old Lions that were making these dumb mistakes all across the board.
A fumble from Godwin Igwebuike led to a turnover, a pass that Jared Goff threw was picked off late in the game. These turnovers just helped seal the deal and allow the Broncos to keep pouring it on.
But it was not even just that. It was the silly mistakes that were the most costly. A Lions offensive lineman managed to step on Goff’s foot after he received the snap making Goff fall-over and throwing away a play.
There were players on the defensive side of the ball who missed some assignments at times and allowed the Broncos defense to take advantage of that in their run-game. It was these little detrimental mistakes that proved to put the Lions at an even bigger disadvantage.
But, as was mentioned in the betting preview for this week, the Broncos had something to play for. They played for Thomas and in his honor. The 1-11-1 Lions are just trying to cross the finish line on this season and turn the attention to the NFL Draft and next year.
However, it does not work that way, they’ve gotta suit up again next Sunday to take on the Arizona Cardinals.
