Detroit Tigers: Spencer Torkelson looking to earn big league debut in 2022
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Tigers have opened up their mini-camp for the minor leaguers as the big league world remains halted due to a lockout. The work stoppage continues, and the hopes for an on-time season continuously dwindles, but there’s still hope to see the big leaguers play in 2022.
For the time being, the big league season remains shelved. However, the Detroit Tigers can still start to look at their prospects to figure out which players will end up cracking the big league roster.
One of the big players that fans are hoping to see is Spencer Torkelson. The former first overall pick from the 2020 season has not earned his chance to debut in the big leagues, but there’s a chance that this will happen in 2022.
It’s been two summers since Torkelson was selected, and after time in Triple-A last summer, he’s going to try and crack the big league roster. He’s got the chance to make his debut, that is for sure.
Detroit Tigers prospect Spencer Torkelson could make his debut in 2022.
Torkelson spent nearly the whole 2021 summer between Double-A and Triple-A. With the Double-A Erie Seawolves, Torkelson logged 50 games where he hit .263/.373/.560 with 14 home runs and 36 RBI.
He would end up earning a promotion as well. He found himself stationed in Toledo with the Triple-A Mud Hens, where he hit .238/.350/.531 with 11 home runs and 27 RBI over 40 games. It was not electric stuff but still a quality performance.
The Tigers have to be looking for Torkelson to make strides and possibly poke through to the big leagues. He’s got a gorgeous swing that delivers solid contact time after time. There’s a lot to like with Torkelson (obviously).
Being the first overall pick, there is some apparent pressure for Torkelson to be great. However, it’s tough to pinpoint when his debut will be. Not even just because of the lockout. Though it seems that the Tigers are going to take their time with Torkelson, 2022 seems like the season.
It feels like it’s just a good time to get Torkelson into the lineup and see what he can do as a part of the lineup day in and day out. The talent is there; I do not need to sit here and tell you all what kind of talent he is for the tenth time.
However, Torkelson should be poking through the minors and finally get his chance to be in the lineup this season.
