The Detroit Red Wings continue pushing along on their 2021-22 season, and forward Jonatan Berggren is continuing to show growth in the minors. He’s in his first season with the Red Wings organization in North America after coming here from Sweden.

For the Detroit Red Wings, it’s been a bit of an adjustment period as prospects come overseas. However, the former second-round pick from the 2018 NHL Entry Draft is still working his way to the NHL ranks.

The Red Wings are starting to see some development and adjustment from Berggren. He’s been stationed here in the United States in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins and has been able to show some growth in the 2021-22 season.

With any luck, Berggren may be able to get a call-up later in the 2021-22 season. If not, he’s a likely name for fans looking ahead as someone who will battle for a roster spot in 2022-23. He will continue to get familiar with North American hockey and work on his development until then.

Detroit Red Wings prospect Jonatan Berggren is showing growth.

Throughout the 2021-22 season, there has been occasional mentions of Berggren’s success. He may not be lighting up the scoresheet every single night; he’s settled in nicely and been a quality performer for the Griffins.

He’s played in 43 games for the Griffins this season, where he has 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 total points. It’s been a heck of a start for the Red Wings prospect, who’s known to be more of a playmaker anyways.

While he was tearing it up in the SHL in recent seasons, Berggren’s game is built to be that of a playmaker who will help create scoring chances and add to the team’s offense. A well-rounded player who is going to contribute well is a late-bloomer who’s starting to show plenty of upside.

His performance with the Griffins thus far in 2021-22 has to bring about some excitement for what is to come. Berggren may not be a top-of-the-organization prospect who’s headed for a Calder Trophy, but there is plenty to like with what he brings to the table.

There’s no exact timetable for Berggren, but the Red Wings made it clear that they are going to be smart and have him take his time. So the debut for Berggren is a bit of a variable right now, but it should be in the cards sooner than later.
