The Detroit Lions will host HBO’s Hard Knocks plus the 2024 NFL Draft
By Bob Heyrman
Monday was quite the day around town for the Detroit Lions. First, HBO Sports and NFL Films announced they’d be presenting the Lions with their series Hard Knocks this summer, and then later in the day; the NFL mentioned that Detroit would be hosting the 2024 NFL Draft.
These are exciting times for Detroit Lions fans. Sure, the city will be mocked throughout the nation for hosting the NFL Draft, but that will be from most folks who are uneducated about the current status of Detroit. If you are reading this and have never been to Detroit, I urge you to come and visit. Detroit is beautiful.
Also, others will just joke that the NFL needed to throw the organization a bone since they haven’t been relevant since the 90s. I get it. Blah, blah, blah. I’m telling you, though, Detroit is on the up and up and has been for quite some time. The Lions, the city, everything. Sure, Detroit and its surroundings, like every large city in America, have its challenges, but for the most part, it’s such a wonderful place to be.
During the announcement, Detroit Lions president Rod Wood mentioned that although it is unlikely the city will ever have the opportunity to host another Super Bowl, the organization hopes to put on a show during the 2024 NFL Draft to show the league all of what Detroit has to offer.
Having the opportunity to host a significant event such as the NFL Draft isn’t just great for the Detroit Lions but the city of Detroit.
The Detroit Lions are in year two of the most recent rebuild under general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell. I am excited to catch an extensive behind-the-scenes glimpse at this current regime during HBO’s Hard Knocks.
The five-part documentary will begin on August 9th at 10 p.m. ET and will air over five consecutive weeks following the Detroit Lions throughout their training camp and preseason.
This has the potential to be television gold.
I can’t wait for the nation to witness running back Jamaal Williams and all his corkiness plus his infectious smile. I am already predicting that Williams will become the fan favorite of the series. Plus, let’s not forget about the kneecap-biting head coach. Campbell is TV gold with his constant phrases and brute honesty.
Oh, and the Detroit Lions will have a pair of first-round picks in the upcoming draft, one of which is scheduled to be the no. 2 overall selection. This is exciting for Lions fans because they will immediately see one of the league’s top prospects go to work, grow and develop over the summer.
There are always many other storylines worth following; how are Jeff Okudah and Romeo Okwara healing? Will Derrick Barnes, Levi Onwuzurike, and Alim McNeill take a step forward in year two? Does Jared Goff look like he did down the stretch? Along with always rooting for that one undrafted rookie to earn one of the final roster spots heading into the regular season.

This should be fun, and if all goes well, perhaps change the lousy narrative across the country surrounding the Detroit Lions. The organization still has a long way to go, but hopefully, they’re headed in the right direction.
