Detroit Red Wings: Simon Edvinsson should aim to make roster in 2022
By Tyler Kotila
The Detroit Red Wings have to be looking ahead at prospect development. Especially with many future studs still in the pipeline to make an impact at the NHL level in the near future. I mean in the 2022-23 season by the near future, not this season.
Simon Edvinsson‘s another giant defenseman that the Detroit Red Wings are investing in for their future. He’s going to be someone to keep an eye on and someone who can bring plenty of value to the Red Wings; he’s shown this already.
There’s no reason that Edvinsson should not be in consideration to make the roster in the 2022-23 season, even if it’s a situation where he is brought to camp and has to earn his way onto the roster, similar to what Lucas Raymond did before this season.
Edvinsson has the makings of a young defenseman who can be an anchor on the second or third pairing for the Red Wings next season. Look how this has worked out for Moritz Seider… there has to be some thought from the front office that Edvinsson will get his shot.
Detroit Red Wings’ Simon Edvinsson’s time is in 2022-23.
Edvinsson has a lot of upside and excitement around him. He’s performed well over in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) this season and looks like he has the tools to bring value to the Red Wings next season.
During his time in Sweden, he has logged 44 games for Frölunda HC, where he has two goals and 17 assists for 19 total points. He’s been a playmaker, more than the statistics may show. He’s someone who can work well in the offensive zone, allow the offense to get set up and create scoring chances.
Edvinsson makes himself seem more valuable by being able to create scoring chances in the form of high danger scoring chances, well-placed shots creating rebounds, and passes to set up scoring chances. Those three things are not always going to show up on the stat sheet, points-wise.
It’s the things that are not going to add goals and assists to Edvinsson’s line that make him an exciting offensive option. Not to mention, Edvinsson does a quality job in the defensive zone and brings a good amount of benefit defensively as well.
Looking ahead, the Red Wings should be viewing Edvinsson as a two-way defenseman who will provide benefit to the team on both ends of the ice. The 2022-23 season is the perfect time for Edvinsson to make the jump; he deserves a chance to break camp with the team, at a minimum.
