The Detroit Tigers season is underway but is already seeing the team have to battle some adversity. It may be early, but the pitching staff is already under some duress, and there has to be some building concern around the situation.

Injuries have gotten into the team’s rotation which is already a youthful bunch. This has required the Detroit Tigers to make some roster moves as the young arms try to get back on track and get the rotation looking as it should.

The first blow to the rotation was to Tigers “ace” Casey Mize, who was placed on the Injured List (IL) with an elbow strain while the team seeks second opinions. This has to be worrisome for Tigers fans, as the elbow is never a good thing in baseball when it comes to injuries.

There’s time, and it could be nothing, but the concern is most definitely real, and there’s cause to be a little worried about the next steps. Though the hope remains that it really is just a strain or tweak, and Mize can slot back into the rotation sooner than later.

Detroit Tigers’ young arms are battling injuries early on in 2022.

Mize is headed for second opinions, which could find something more serious, which would be a crushing blow to the team’s starting rotation in a year of promise. The Tigers are hurting on both sides of the baseball, and it’s not just Mize.

But when it comes to their young arms, Matt Manning seems to also be under the microscope lately, as the team keeps a watchful eye on his health. After his recent start against the Kansas City Royals, Manning exited the game after just two innings of work.

He seemed to be having some issues with his shoulder, and the Tigers opted to turn over the game to the bullpen as a precautionary measure for Manning. After the game, it was reported that he left the start with right shoulder discomfort, and the Tigers said they planned to keep an eye on his health and get him evaluated.

Nothing new has emerged since, so it may have been a product of fatigue from Spring Training and having to throw in colder weather than down in Florida. With two of the team’s three young arms having some injury concerns, there has to be worry about what might come of this.

But, there’s hope that both these arms can bounce back and be just fine. However, the concern is real moving forward. No Tigers fan wants to see the team lose out on their young arms due to injury, so being cautious is key.
