Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell entered this season as a consensus favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year honors.

Fresh off a Week 1 win against the defending Super Bowl Champions, Campbell’s odds to win the award have already fallen from +850 to +750, but that doesn’t mean you should wait for them to go back up!

If the Lions beat the Seahawks in Week 2, it’s hard to see these odds not dropping even further.

Here’s why you should consider Campbell for Coach of the Year, even as the betting favorite:

Coach of the Year Odds on FanDuel

Dan Campbell (Detroit Lions) +750

Sean Payton (Denver Broncos) +1600

Matt Eberflus (Chicago Bears) +1600

Robert Saleh (New York Jets) +1600

Matt Lafleur (Green Bay Packers) +1600

Arthur Smith (Atlanta Falcons) +1600

Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers) +1800

Why Dan Campbell Will Win Coach of the Year

First off, let’s discuss what this award is really all about.

Year after year, this award is the most narrative-based one out there. If Coach of the Year were purely merit-based, people like Andy Reid or Kyle Shanahan would mop the floor with the rest of the league each season.

Instead, this award is often given to a coach who did much more with his team than what was expected (see Brian Daboll of the New York Giants, last season’s COY winner).

We’re only one game in, but is there any better story than the Lions right now?

This team has been hyped up all season after going on a 7-2 run to close out last season, and they didn’t disappoint in Thursday night’s 21-20 win.

The Lions are currently listed at -250 odds to make the playoffs and when you consider the NFC North (weak) and the NFC Wildcard picture (barren), it’s easy to see how this team could break through to the postseason.

And if the DETROIT LIONS, one of the NFL’s most disparaged teams, makes a playoff run, what other story will top that this season?

The only ones I can think of to possibly top that would be Sean Payton leading a resurgence in Denver or Robert Saleh dominating with an Aaron Rodgers-led Jets team. But considering those teams both play in loaded divisions and conferences, I’ll still ride with Campbell here.

Jump on Campbell – one of the NFL’s most brazen and exciting coaches – to win Coach of the Year behind a lovable Lions team.
