Everyone around the NFL was hyping up the Detroit Lions this season after their red-hot finish to 2022, but did anyone expect them to be in the conversation for best in the sport?

Detroit (5-1) would be undefeated if not for an overtime loss to Seattle and it’s worth wondering where they stack up among the league’s best.

ESPN personalities such as Stephen A. Smith and Mike Greenberg are already fully on board, naming the Lions are the best team in the NFL.

Let’s dig into their comments and see if they’re onto something, or just starting conversation.

Are the Detroit Lions the Best Team in the NFL?

Detroit is currently tied for the best record in the NFL with the league’s best run defense and a top-five scoring offense.

That’s in large part why Greenberg took such a firm stance during his ESPN morning show ‘Get Up’ on Tuesday.

“That’s why the Lions are the best team in football. No one’s talking about it, but the Lions are the best team because they can beat you any way you want to play them,” Greenberg said.

Detroit has proven that so far, beating teams like the Packers and Panthers in shootouts while also beating the Chiefs, Falcons and Bucs in low-scoring, hard-fought games.

It’s hard to find flaws in the Lions so far.

They’ve had a top-five offense by almost every metric, a top rush defense, a middle-of-the pack pass defense and a kicking game that’s resulted in just one missed kick.

“The Detroit Lions are the No. 1 team after Week 6 because here’s the reason why: their defense is real,” Smith said on Tuesday.” They’re going to have a defensive player of the year on that squad. Understand, we have to look at it from that perspective.

“Offensively, they have Jameson Williams back after his whole gambling situation. Now he’s a long-range target. You’ve got Jared Goff as an MVP candidate. They can run the ball. They can pass the ball. They’re rough riders. They have a chip on their shoulder.”

The Lions have tough competition among the top of the NFL, with the Chiefs, Eagles, Dolphins and 49ers also sitting at 5-1.
