Lions QB Jared Goff Enters NFL MVP Discussion (But Can He Win?)

The Jared Goff-Matthew Stafford trade couldn’t be working out better for Detroit, but did any of us envision Goff becoming a borderline MVP candidate like this?

Goff will have an uphill battle to win the award, but he ALREADY has the eighth-shortest odds to win the award at 20-to-1 and just won NFC Offensive Player of the Week for throwing for 353 yards and 2 TDs in a 20-6 win over Tampa Bay.

Let’s dig into the NFL MVP race a little deeper to see if this is really a conversation worth having.

NFL MVP Odds

Tua Tagovailoa (+350 odds) and Patrick Mahomes (+450) are the clear-cut favorites to win NFL MVP through the first six weeks of this NFL season, but there’s still 12 weeks left for competitors like Goff to close the gap!

Goff (1,618 passing yards, 13 total TDs) is already on pace with Tagovailoa (1,876 passing yards, 14 total TDs) and Mahomes (1,593 yards, 11 total TDs) statistically!

And the schedule is about to get a whole lot easier for the Lions, too.

Detroit will face the AFC North leading Ravens this week, but will play the Raiders, Chargers, Bears (twice), Vikings (twice), Packers, Saints, Broncos and Cowboys.

If the Lions win most of those games and Goff keeps up his pace of play, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be on the short list to win this award – especially when you consider it almost ALWAYS goes to quarterbacks on playoff teams.

Of course, Goff will have to compete with more than just Tagovailoa and Mahomes, with Josh Allen (+700), Jalen Hurts (+750), Brock Purdy (+1100), Christian McCaffrey (+1500) and Lamar Jackson (+1800) still ahead of him in the odds to win the award.
