It’s without a doubt that this has already been one of the most fun seasons of all-time, but just how good could this season be?

Detroit recently set a franchise record with its 14th straight game with 20 points or more (now 15 after Week 6) and it got me wondering as to what other records could be in reach this season.

It turns out, there’s several up for grabs, and this season is already on pace to be one of the best seasons in Lions history!

Let’s dig into the records this Detroit team could break.

Detroit Lions Franchise Records Within Reach

The Lions have had a rough history, but still have some impressive accomplishments across the years, including a single-season record of 2,053 rushing yards from Barry Sanders and a single-season record of 1,964 receiving yards from Calvin Johnson.

But there are still PLENTY of records that won’t be too hard to break.

Single-Season Wins Record

1991 Lions: 12-4

2023 Lions: 5-1

Season-long pace: 14-3

This is one of the most attainable records on this list. This year’s Lions have the advantage of playing an extra game than many of the teams before them and they’re already out to one of the hottest starts in franchise history.

The Lions have a relatively weak schedule remaining and would have to finish just 8-4 the rest of the way to set the wins record.

Most Points in a Single Season

2011 Lions: 474 points

2023 Lions: 168 in 6 games

Season-long pace: 476 points

This record is certainly within reach, but it won’t be easy to break. Detroit is just barely on pace to break this record, and will likely have to have one more big scoring game in them to set a more comfortable pace.

But considering they’re riding a 20-point streak of 15 straight games, it’s certainly possible this happens.

Best Single-Season Point Differential

1934 Lions: +179 points

2023 Lions: +55 points

Season-long pace: +156 points

The 1934 Lions appear a few times on this list and they’ll be hard to top in this category.

If the offense can maintain its torrid pace and the defense can take advantage of some suspect offenses (Raiders, Bears twice, Saints, Broncos), a blowout or two could put this number in play.

Best Single-Season Average Margin of Victory

1934 Lions: +13.8 points per win

2023 Lions: +9.2 points per win

Another ‘34 Lions stat that will require even better play from this year’s Lions.

Detroit would need to leave no doubt in many of its remaining wins, including several multi-score finishes to have a chance at sniffing this record.

Single-Season Passing Yards

Matthew Stafford (2011): 5,038 yards

Jared Goff (2023): 1,618 yards

Season-long pace: 4,584 yards

This may be the most out-of-reach stat on this list, but it’s close enough to talk about.

Goff has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in Lions history, and he’s shown his ability to create big plays, too. Of course, he will need a few 300+ yard games on the way in to come close to 5,000 yards, but it’s not out of the question.

Least Interceptions in a Single Season (Min. 500 attempts)

Jared Goff (2022): 7 INTs in 587 attempts

Jared Goff (2023): 3 INTs in 203 attempts

Season-long pace: 9 INTs in 575 attempts

This is where you realize just how good Goff has been in Detroit.

He might not have the wow-factor that Stafford did, but his ability to avoid mistakes is a big reason why the Lions are having so much success. He could very well break his own record again this season.

Most Receptions in a Single Season

Herman Moore (1995): 123 receptions

Amon-Ra St. Brown (2023): 38 receptions in 5 games played

Season-long pace: 122 receptions

To me, this will be the record that will be the most fun to watch. St. Brown has already battled multiple injuries this season and even missed a game, but he’s still right on pace for the record.

Most Lions fans give St. Brown his due, but it only seems right that he adds his name in the record books for one of the best seasons in franchise history.
