Amon-Ra St. Brown Breaks Shocking Calvin Johnson Record
Amon-Ra St. Brown has been one of the best NFL Draft steals in recent seasons, but did we ever expect him to get out to the best start in franchise history?
St. Brown put his name in good company on Monday Night against Las Vegas as he became the wide receiver with the most receiving yards (2,738 yards) through his first 40 games with Detroit – breaking Calvin Johnson’s record of 2,694 yards in his first 40 games.
This is pretty impressive no matter which way you slice it. But what does it say about St. Brown, and just how great is he?
Let’s dig into the details.
Amon-Ra St. Brown Sets Lions Receiving Record
It’s challenging to compare St. Brown, a slot receiver, with Johnson, a big-bodied threat on the outside, but it’s encouraging that they’re even being mentioned together.
But just as Johnson perfectly suited Matthew Stafford’s ability, St. Brown is doing the same for Jared Goff – a patient pocket passer who often makes the safe throw.
But can St. Brown break more of Johnson’s records?
Johnson’s single-season receiving record of 1,964 yards will be hard to top, and I personally don’t see St. Brown sniffing those numbers, especially with an average of 11.7 yards per catch.
HOWEVER, St. Brown could absolutely break Herman Moore’s record of 123 receptions in a single season (Johnson had 122 in 2012).
St. Brown recorded 106 receptions last season and he’s currently on pace for 130 receptions this season!
Lions fans already appreciate how good St. Brown has been, but it’s about time we start talking about him as one of the best offensive players to don Honolulu blue and silver.
